Integrate ibVPN in Home LAN

ClearOS can be used to integrate ibVPN into a Local Area Network for Linux machines. This allows users to be connected directly through the VPN for additional protection.

ClearOS Development and Features

ClearOS may be known to some as Clark Connect. ClearOS is based on CentOS and Red Hat Enterprise Linux. The ClearOS distro app is designed for the ibVPN service and targets small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). ClearOS can be used with ibVPN for individuals as well, however. The ibVPN ClearOS app was designed based on the ibVPN OpenVPN protocol and built by the ClearOS development team from scratch. The software application was designed as a network gateway and network server with a web-based administration interface. It includes many features that provide better security for local networks.

Besides ibVPN integration for PPTP and OpenVPN, ClearOS helps to protect users with several key features. These include a stateful firewall (iptables), networking and security. It has a web proxy that includes content filtering and antivirus from Squid or DansGuardian. ClearOS offers email services through Webmail, Postfix, SMTP, POP3/s, and IMAP/s. It also has Lolab groupware and a database and web server with an easy to deploy LAMP stack. ClearOS offers Samba and CUPS file and print services as well as unified multi-protocol storage through Flexshares using CIFS, HTTP/S, FTP/S, and SMTP. It can run the Internet fault tolerant design MultiWAN and provides built-in reports for MRTG and other system statistics and services.

ClearOS Installation and Configuration on LAN

Install the ClearOS app by using the command: # yum install –enablerepo=clearos-contribs app-ibvpn. Set the Network connection to Gateway and disable any proxy settings you have. If you are updating a previous version of ClearOS, run the following command to get it working: # yum update –enablerepo=clearos-contribs app-ibvpn. If you have trouble with the process, contact ClearOS or ibVPN support.

Once installed or updated, the ClearOS app can be configured to use any device with the ibVPN service. It can be set to work inside home or office LAN to work this way automatically. To do this, go to the ibVPN ClearOS app menu and assign the hostname/IP address for the device you want to use. The you don’t have to setup the ibVPN service for your device. This process is almost the same as setting up the ibVPN service on your router, but this is easier and faster and much more convenient. When you have put in the settings, you can then choose a device on your LAN, choose an ibVPN server, and have the device route through that server to connect to the Internet.

Running your VPN through your local area network may not be the best solution for your needs. Depending on your priorities, your network setup and other factors, you may be better off with a different solution. For instance, having the VPN on your router may work better to give you access to other Internet enabled devices. Or you may need individual VPN connections on separate devices so you can connect some devices through the VPN and others through the local connection.
